What about making something similar? This past weekend I had to carry a backpack full of stuff. Using my cargo net and bungee cord I strapped it to the passenger seat. I found leaning against it gave my back some support. Although the items in the backpack were hard, you could certainly go to an upholstery store and buy foam to stuff a backpack with (or sew a cylinder shape made of vinyl or a weatherproof type material). It probably won't be the most stylish thing in the world, but I bet it gets the job done and saves lots of $$.
